In this issue: | How To Improve Your Chances To Live A Long Healthy Life (Survival Of The Fittest) I have been practicing Family Medicine for 32 years now and in my 'old age' have become more vocal and opinionated. I love my medical practice. It has been a sustaining and nurturing influence in my life. In spite of the tremendous demands, both intellectual and emotional, that my patients place on me, it has been a privilege to be involved in their lives. On average most of my patients have been with me for 20 years and some have known me since I started back in 1974. I have delivered their kids, and cared for the kids of the kids I delivered. It has afforded me a wonderful opportunity to learn about life, love, happiness and health. As I have always stated, 'Your Health Is Your Most Precious Possession' Without it you have nothing. All the success and all the money in the world cannot buy back your health. The pharmaceutical industry has given us a double edge sword. Many of the cholesterol and blood pressure lowering drugs have significant risk reduction impact. They can slow down the progression and complications of Heart Disease and Stroke. They are important and valuable. We are told this in countless TV advertisements. Yet what we are NOT told is more important. What you do not hear from Big Pharma and what you need to ask is: Of all strategies to improve my chances of leading a long healthy life, which offers the greatest risk reduction power? Is it drugs or changing my lifestyle? Two factors emerge which have now be validated by good science based evidence. An article published by Dr. Jonathan Myers in the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine reported on the value of peak exercise capacity as a risk reducer for heart disease and stroke both in healthy middle age males and in males with preexistent heart disease. The study confirmed that two strategies offer the greatest risk reduction. Guess what? Neither involves drugs. One, if you smoke - quit (please use my Quit Smoking Hypnosis or mp3 for an excellent start)! Two, get active. Commit to doing some moderate intensity exercise three to four times weekly for about 40 minutes. The intensity of exercise activity is defined in Mets. One Met is the amount of activity required to sit quietly while awake and breathing. Peak exercise activity is the ability to exercise to maximal exertion and can be measured indirectly and easily using Mets. Sorry Golfers, golf in a cart or walking the course (only 2 to 3 Mets) will not do it. Moderate intensity exercise (5 to 6 Mets) 40 minutes three to four times weekly will train your body to be able to achieve a peak exercise capacity of 8 Mets or greater. Exercise at this level can be achieved by walking at 4 miles an hour (not that tough) or cycling 8 to 9 miles per hour, or light weight training. The study defines the ability to reach a peak exercise level of 8 Mets or greater as necessary to gain the risk reduction benefits. Truly, the fittest people survive the longest. This is how I counsel my patients and, for some patients, I will create personalized hypnotic CDs for to amplify the motivation, willpower and inspiration required to make these changes.
